2023 AAA Conference

R³eimagined

Re-Connect, Re-Energize, Re-Strengthen

Call for Proposals

The Academic Advising Association at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln is excited to host its 10th Annual Academic Advising Conference on Monday, March 6, 2023, at the Nebraska Innovation Campus Conference Center. This year’s conference is planned to be entirely in-person, and we are excited to see, interact, and network with everyone again. We will continue to monitor the situation with COVID-19, and we plan to follow all of the health protocols put in place by the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department, the University of Nebraska, and the NIC Conference Center.

The conference committee has identified three concentrations within the broad theme of Reimagined: Re-Connect, Re-Energize, and Re-Strengthen to provide ideas to potential presenters. We encourage all proposals for presentations, panels, & mini-presentations that benefit academic advisors and student affairs professionals even if they don’t neatly fit a particular concentration. The conference will include 50-minute presentation sessions.

Re-Connect:

  • What strategies can we promote that allow academic advisors and student affairs professionals to re-connect with one another in a professional setting?
  • What impact do professional connections have on job satisfaction and career growth?
  • How can we assist students to re-connect with their campus communities - peers, faculty/staff, alumni, career partners, and others?
  • How do we lead students in making connections to academic, career, and overall wellness resources and opportunities?
  • What impact do campus connections have on students’ college experiences and future endeavors?

Re-Energize:

  • How do we as student affairs professionals stay energized for our students and the profession?
  • Finding new and creative ways to have the energy needed for work/life balance.
  • Motivation = thriving. How are we making the most of our time to be productive and efficient?
  • What strategies can support advisors in being willing and wanting to put forth their best self or effort?
  • How do we as advisors thrive instead of survive in current times? How do we help students thrive as well?

Re-Strengthen:

  • How do we reinforce the importance of the academic journey for students and a generation that is revaluating their priorities?
  • How can academic advisors impact the student connection to their university?
  • What strategies can encourage balance in the lives of student affairs professionals to reduce burn out?
  • How can we prepare for future unknown crises?
  • What opportunities are there to positively impact the mental health of students and professionals?

Proposal Guidance

Proposals are welcome from all colleagues. Intercampus cooperation is appreciated and encouraged. Novice and experienced presenters alike, including graduate students, are encouraged to collaborate and submit 50-minute presentation session proposals. We are looking for interactive, innovative, and engaging concurrent sessions in a variety of formats that will aid attendees in enhancing their knowledge and skills to promote student and advisor success. Do not feel like you need to be a subject matter expert to present – all of us can share our ideas or experiences and lead others through discussion and reflection.

Your submission should include your presentation title, the primary thematic concentration, desired format, a maximum of 300-word proposal, and 100-word abstract. You will be asked to share how your session addresses the thematic concentration. The abstracts may be included in the conference schedule.

Session Formats

Presentation Format for Concurrent Session

A 50-minute presentation led by one or more presenters. Session should include discussion time for questions and answers.

Panel Format for Concurrent Session

A 50-minute panel format can be used to discuss a common issue. A panel format includes a moderator and a small team of panelists. The moderator leads a brief discussion and includes the panelists in an interactive question and answer period with the audience.

Poster Session (Graduate Students)

Poster sessions encourage current graduate students to share their passions and research with the general advising community. Poster sessions will be held during the lunch period but after meals have been served. Poster sessions can be a successful way to display programmatic approaches and research findings. Presenters should share information and answer questions about their presentation topic.

Questions can be directed to the AAA Conference Proposal Subcommittee contact: Megan Christensen, megan.christensen@unl.edu.

The deadline for proposal submissions was Monday, January 23, 2023.
