I am an Academic Advisor in the College of Arts and Sciences advising for Political Science, and the Public Policy Analysis Certificate.  I have worked at UNL for 27 years, with the last 13 years in academic advising.  Currently  I also advise the Saudi Student Association RSO, the Omani Student Association RSO, and the Robitschek Scholarship exchange students from the Czech Republic.  My previous work at UNL was in The Explore Center with undecided and pre-professional advising, Undergraduate Admissions with international admissions and recruitment and domestic admissions and recruitment, and International Affairs with sponsored programs and education abroad.  I have held numerous elected positions in other professional organizations, including President and Vice-President of NACRAO (Nebraska Association of College Registrars and Admission Officials), and NAFSA Region II RAP Knowledge Community Representative.  I love the community of advisors at UNL and look forward to working with everyone this coming year.  In my personal life I’m a wife, mother of four, dog mom to Lilo the Corgi, and enjoy cooking/baking, traveling, volunteering, and playing the piano.

Doug Pellatz

I am academic advisor in the College of Arts and Sciences who works with students majoring in Geology, Mathematics, and Meteorology-Climatology.  I also serve the Math Department as the campus-wide contact for the Math Placement Exam and placement in first-year Math courses.  I have been at UNL pretty much full time as a graduate student or professional since 2009, and I have been in the College of Arts and Sciences since 2013.  During my time in the College, I have worked as a general advisor in the College’s Advising Center and as an assigned advisor both in the College’s Advising Center and from the Math Department.  All of my experience as an assigned advisor has been with students majoring in the sciences, which fits my background.  My undergraduate degree is in interdisciplinary sciences (with an emphasis in atmospheric sciences) from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, and I have a masters degree in higher education administration from UNL.  Recently, I started serving as an RSO advisor to the UNL Chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success.

I have been pretty active within AAA serving as Conference Committee Chair (2021-22), Best Practices and Professional Development Committee Chair (2020-21), Treasurer (2018-19 and 2019-20), and Secretary (2016-17).  I have also been a member of NACADA since 2013, and I will be co-chairing the 2023 NACADA Region 6 Conference that will be held in Nebraska.  In my free time, you will find me spending time with my wife and our two cats, helping out our families, and playing Dungeons and Dragons.

 Stephanie Osterthun

I have almost 30 years of experience in a variety of higher education settings and capacities including career coaching, academic advising, recruiting, admissions, new student orientation programs, scholarship coordination, international student admissions/advising, and federal TRiO grant administration. In addition, I have developed and taught first year experience and career exploration courses.  I first began working for UNL in 2008 and have held a variety of academic advising positions.  In August 2022, I began working as Career and Student Experience Coach in CASNR.  In this role, I support student development in job search and portfolio development, as well as help plan the Career Fairs and other informational events.

A native of south central Kansas, I earned my associate's degree from Cowley County Community College, my bachelor's degree from Wichita State University and Master’s Degree in Student Counseling and Personnel Services from Kansas State University.

Outside of work, my husband and I enjoy living on our acreage south of Lincoln where he keeps busy with his vegetable garden and I keep busy with my flower gardens in the spring and summer.  Weekends in the fall are, of course, dedicated to Husker football!  We also try to visit our grandsons, ages 7, 5 and 1, in Columbia, MO and Rogers, AR as much as possible.

 Katie Forrest

My name is Katie Forrest and I have been at UNL since 2018 when I started my Master’s Degree at UNL and worked as a Graduate Assistant with the Department of Animal Science.  I have also served as an Academic Advisor for the College of Engineering and now have the opportunity with work as an Advisor for the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.  Before my time here at UNL I worked at a private healthcare college in Omaha, NE for three years.  Throughout my journey within higher education I have always loved working one-to-one with students.  I am a first-generation college student and know firsthand the struggles of pursuing a degree as the first one in my family.

I am originally from Illinois, but have lived in Wisconsin and California before setting my roots down here in Nebraska.  I enjoy spending my time with my husband, our cats and dog, and my church community.  I love cooking and consider it my creative outlet.  I am excited to be joining the AAA Executive Committee!

Alexis Partridge

I am an academic advisor with the College of Arts and Sciences. I have been advising psychology majors since 2016 after graduating with my master’s in Educational Administration. My experience on campus (and interest in student affairs) extends back to my undergraduate days. I spent a wonderful semester studying abroad, and realized it would not have been possible without the assistance of academic advisors and other professionals. However, it took a few years to find my way back to UNL after completing my undergraduate degree. I spent time working abroad and was teaching students in K-12 environments when I realized that I would most enjoy working in a university setting. I enjoy the one-on-one nature of academic advising – whether engaging in problem solving, thinking strategically, or dreaming about academic and professional possibilities; it is exciting to see students take hold of experiences that will shape their lives now and beyond college. In the same way we encourage students to join campus organizations, I have greatly benefited from involvement in professional organizations on campus. I served as the treasurer for Young Professionals at Nebraska from 2017-2018, and I am excited to join the AAA executive team. In my free time I like to get outdoors – bike, hike, run, walk, you name it!

Dr. Erin Sayer

I am an Associate Professor of Practice for Biochemistry Education & Advising working with Arts and Sciences students and a subset of  Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources students. I have been advising at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln since 2002.  I was the first in my family to go to college and earned my bachelor’s degree from Peru State College before completing my master’s degree in educational administration and my PhD in Higher Education Leadership, both from UNL.  I live about an hour from campus on a 160 acre “farm” of native Nebraska grasses and wildflowers, where I enjoy time outdoors with my husband and two girls.  In addition to working with college students and my colleagues in a variety of capacities, I enjoy Family, Cooking, Camping, and both Active and Passive Engagement in a wide variety of sports.

 Jamil Funnah

Hello! My name is Jamil Funnah. I joined AAA because of how important the advising process is for students, and I would like to make a positive impact on that. This last year I volunteered as a part of the Social Justice & Inclusion Committee in hopes of making equitable changes for the students here at UNL. I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy with a minor in Psychology from the UNL. I am currently working on my Master’s in Educational Administration. I work as a graduate assistant with the TRIO Upward Bound programs on campus as well as being the house director for the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity.

 Marissa Starman

Hello! I am an Academic Advisor in the College of Business where I advise students in all of our majors. I began at UNL in the CoB in July of 2018. Prior to that, I was finishing my Master’s Degree in Counseling in Student Affairs in Higher Education just up the road at UNO. My bachelor’s degree was earned from Doane College (now Doane University) where I majored in Psychology and Sociology.

Given that all of my previous educational experiences since kindergarten had been at smaller schools, I was somewhat nervous about the size of UNL. But, I was pleasantly surprised to find that UNL doesn’t feel as big as it is, particularly amongst the advising community. I credit the Academic Advising Association for that. I’m excited to serve the AAA organization this year and look forward to building and growing connections with colleagues around campus!

Outside of work, you can find me spending time with my husband, busy toddler, and two kitties. I also enjoy visiting family, spending time outdoors (when it’s nice), singing/listening to music, and I’m always down for a line dance!
