Designing the Future and Building Tomorrow

Call for Proposals:

The Academic Advising Association at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln is excited to host its 9th Annual Academic Advising Conference on Thursday, March 3, 2022. This year’s conference has been moved back to an online format due to the increase in corona virus infections caused by the new omicron variant of the virus.

The 2022 AAA Conference will be held nearly two years since the World Health Organization declared the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak a global pandemic and since the killing of George Floyd. This year we explore the creative solutions we put in place to keep each other and our students safe from both physical and social disease.

The conference committee has identified four concentrations within the broad theme of Designing the Future and Building Tomorrow to provide ideas to potential presenters. We encourage all proposals for presentations that benefit academic advisors and student affairs professionals even if they don’t neatly fit a particular concentration. The conference will include two 50-minute concurrent sessions and two 25-minute concurrent sessions. Presenters will be able to select their preference of time frame when they submit their proposal.

Diversity and Inclusion:

  • What drives student participation with equity and inclusion programming?
  • How can academic advisors and student affairs professionals stand in solidarity with our BIPOC students?
  • Do you have authentic initiatives or effective practices in the equity and inclusion space to share?
  • What are proactive steps we can take to begin addressing the existing oppression that leads to discrimination and bigotry, within our own personal and professional spheres of influence?
  • How do we create a culture of care?

Leadership and Development:

  • What strategies can we employ to prepare us for future unknown crises?
  • How can integrate current research about working with students into our daily practices?
  • What are the ways that we can develop our own leadership skills to better serve our students?
  • How do we improve the career trajectory in academic advising and student affairs without removing advisors or professionals from student facing roles?

Technology and Practice:

  • How can we leverage knowledge gained about the impact of recent crises on our students to better serve our students?
  • What resources (software, hardware, methods, processes) have emerged as particularly effective in advising and/or student affairs?
  • What are best practices for continuing the virtual connection with students in a post-pandemic world?
  • How have you made advising or student affairs more inclusive?

Wellness and Self-Care:

  • How do you maintain balance between your work and your personal life when working from home?
  • What has been your experience with the transition back to campus? How can we mitigate pain points as we transition from work-from-home to being on campus?
  • In what ways can we build wellness and self-care into our daily work schedule?
  • How can we lead students to develop wellness and self-care habits?
Proposal Guidance

Proposals are welcome from all colleagues. Intercampus cooperation is appreciated and encouraged. Novice and experienced presenters alike, including graduate students, are encouraged to collaborate and submit 50-minute or 25-minute concurrent session proposals. We are looking for interactive, innovative, and engaging concurrent sessions in a variety of formats that will aid attendees in enhancing their knowledge and skills to promote student and advisor success. Do not feel like you need to be a subject matter expert to present – all of us can share our ideas or experiences and lead others through discussion and reflection.

All proposals should be submitted online at https://aaa.unl.edu/2022-call-proposals-form. The deadline for proposal submissions has been pushed back to Monday, January 17, 2022 due to the change in conference format.

Questions can be directed to the Conference Proposal Subcommittee Chair, Kerry Fina (kfina@unomaha.edu, 402.554.2370) or the 2022 Conference Chair, Doug Pellatz (dpellatz@unl.edu, 402.472.4319).
